wHO WE ARE
Northern Rivers Community Healing Hub (NRCHH) is a self-organising network of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members and professionals creating a community healing space to support recovery that is grounded in the trauma-informed, grounding and regulating practices of First Nations peoples.
Our aim is to provide a community healing space to support flood recovery that has an organic nature, is flexible, will incorporate the grounding and regulating gifts of our First Nations People, and responds to the real needs on the ground in ways that is accessible to those in need.

Caroline atkinson
Caroline Atkinson, who prefers to be called Carlie, is, a proud Bundjalung and Yiman woman who holds a PhD from Charles Darwin University (2009) and is an accredited clinical Social Worker. She's not just your average academic – she's passionate about addressing complex and intergenerational trauma while championing strengths-based healing approaches within Indigenous communities in Australia.
Throughout her career, Carlie has delved deep into understanding the connections between trauma and violence within Aboriginal populations. Her journey has been enriched by hands-on experience, collaborating with communities to develop valuable resources. One of her significant achievements is crafting Australia's first culturally sensitive and reliable assessment measure for Aboriginal trauma.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Carlie is the driving force behind We Al-li, a family organization she leads as CEO. We Al-li specializes in Culturally Informed Trauma Integrated Healing Approaches (CITIHA) training and resource development for organizations and communities all across Australia. Their focus is on transforming systems and implementing change that truly matters.
Her expertise doesn't stop there. Carlie is a sought-after figure in policy and high-level meetings, representing both government and non-government bodies. She played a pivotal role in establishing PACFA's inaugural College of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Practices.
She's also actively involved in the MRFF funded "Replanting the Birthing Trees" project, contributing to information resources for service providers and parents. Carlie is spearheading the development of immersive experiential reflective training for those working with parents in the critical first 2000 days.
In 2022, following the devastating Northern Rivers floods, Carlie took the initiative to create the Northern Rivers Community Healing Hub. This hub offers a unique Indigenous response to the community's social and emotional wellbeing needs.
